Things by Eloise Greenfield

Here is a poem we have been reading together during community circle. Let’s try to memorize the poem!

Things

-Eloise Greenfield
Went to the corner
Walked in the store
Bought me some candy
Ain’t got it no more
Ain’t got it no more

Went to the beach
Played on the shore
Built me a sandhouse
Ain’t got it no more
Ain’t got it no more

Went to the kitchen
Lay down on the floor
Made me a poem
Still got it
Still got it

  19. I’m an English teacher for Twelfth and I’m in a ESL classroom. My students don’t appreciate the poems and they don’t get the point or the main idea of it. They are like what is that you ain’t got it no more and then you still got it. I meet another teacher with the same class as me and she was like telling me: “Hey, we have to check the syllabus because these poems are not good for the students.”. I got so mad that I didn’t said nothing. It is just the way you explain the students with enthusiasm.

    • Hi Sheila!
Thank you so much for your comment. I really loved this poem, and my 5th grade students overall really have liked it these past few years that I’ve taught it. A few of them even created poems that are inspired by this one! I agree with you that it is about the enthusiasm you show as a teacher can really affect the way the students will think of it as well.

  20. Thank you! Jee Young
Tomorrow I’m going to be evaluated in my job and I will use this poem and another poem named Song by: Ashley Bryan. My students don’t know English, so I have to read it in English and in Spanish. Also, I give them a multiple choice to decide which one is the main idea of each poem. I love to be a teacher, I wake up every day with illusion of what I’m going to find out today in the classroom because if I wake up thinking of the bad things I will not wake up. You just have to love it. Sheila

  29. This is an excellent poem. For those of you who don’t know, this poem means that in iife many things we will get, these things will get old, be thrown away, worn out and discarded. However, what ever you put in your mind will last take forever. The thief may take your money but your knowledge can never be taken by anyone!!!
